Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the renowned author of Project Hail Mary and The Martian comes a “propulsive” (NPR) tale of science, suspense, and humor—a heist story set on the moon.

“An action-packed techno-thriller of the first order.”—USA Today

Jasmine Bashara never signed up to be a hero. She just wanted to get rich.

Not crazy, eccentric-billionaire rich, like many of the visitors to her hometown of Artemis, humanity’s first and only lunar colony. Just rich enough to move out of her coffin-sized apartment and eat something better than flavored algae. Rich enough to pay off a debt she’s owed for a long time.

So when a chance at a huge score finally comes her way, Jazz can’t say no. But engineering the perfect crime is just the start of her problems—because her little heist is about to land her in the middle of a conspiracy for control of Artemis herself.

Trapped between competing forces, pursued by a killer and the law alike, she’ll have to hatch a truly spectacular scheme to have a chance at staying alive and saving her city.

Jazz is no hero, but she is a very good criminal.

That’ll have to do.

Fast paced and engaging. Bit of a different space based novel.
  • A great read

An intriguing and captivating story! The scientific plot is engaging, not dull. It follows a young girl facing financial difficulties but devising a crazy, awesome solution. Despite being a sci-fi book, it offers many other cool elements. It’s a great read, but not a fast-paced or lengthy book; it’s a good read for about 2-3 weeks.
  • A Bit of a Disappointment

Given how good Weir’s 1st book was - "The Martian" - this book was a bit of a disappointment. It starts out OK with setting up the place and characters. The quirky main character -Jazz Bashara - is fun at first but got a bit tiresome to me after a while. After that it is pretty mundane until about ¾ of the way through. I have to admit that while reading that part of the book I was not all that motivated to read it, sometimes going a week without picking it up. I even considered not finishing it a time or two. The finale is quite good but not worth plowing through the rest of the book. I will add a disclaimer and say I have read a lot of ScFi in the past 40 or so years so I’m kinda picky about it. 1 ½ stars really - the extra ½ star was for the ending.

Another absolutely cinematic entry into Andy Weir’s collective works. I for one would love to see this turned into a motion picture like this other two novels!

I love how his books have general repeating themes with different stories. This was interesting all throughout. I understood the technical science information better after reading his other two books.
  • A Different Kind of Tale

I would call this book a departure from what Andy Weir has written before (The Martian, Project Hail Mary), and I’ve seen mixed reviews. It may not be for everyone, but I enjoyed the romp on the wilder side! Still with a solid science backbone, but more of a gritty “film noir” style that reminded me of Sam Spade stories. I would imagine Weir had fun writing it and gave him a change of pace as well.
  • Why do authors need to use blasphemy?

I seriously doubt anyone would put this book down or give it a bad review if it did not have any blasphemy. So, why add any at all. As rich and beautiful as the English language is, why resort to the seedy side of the dictionary. About 10% in and I had to stop. Totally unnecessary and very offensive. Pity.

Andy Weir is a great writer. I couldn’t wait to read this after work everyday.
  • Weird and Horny

Unbelievable story and character making decisions coupled with endless talk of sex and masturbating by the protagonist. Like, way too much to be believable- and it reflects more on who the writer is rather than the character or reader. I really like The Martian and Project: Hail Mary, but this book is just terrible.

Andy’s writing is snappy and awesome as always. It felt a little similar to The Martian. Whichever one you read first will be preferred. Easily my favourite active sci-fi author
