Description

An Apple Books Classic edition.

Alexandre Dumas’ classic paints a portrait of Edmond Dantès, a dark and calculating man who is willing to wait years to exact his perfect plan for revenge. After his so-called friends frame him for treason, Dantès is sentenced to life imprisonment in a grim island fortress on what was supposed to be his wedding day. After 14 years, he manages to escape prison, but he is unable to free himself from an all-consuming fury. Instead, Dantès spends a decade carrying out the plan for revenge he conceived while behind bars, bringing nightmarish ruination to those who once betrayed him-and second chances to those who tried to save him.

When it was first published in 1844, The Count of Monte Cristo quickly became the best-selling book in all of Europe. Dumas’ novel was ahead of its time, an exciting tale of adventure, treasure, secret identities, and daring escapes. It also reads like an early psychological thriller, leaving readers uneasy as they cheer Dantès on in his vengeful quest. It’s no wonder this book has inspired dozens of screen adaptations!

  • Great Book / Bad Translation

Of course this is a fantastic book, but the translation was horrid. Many grammatical errors throughout. Duplicate sentences/paragraphs. It seemed AI translated in my opinion. Due to these issues it was difficult to flow through these elaborate passages. But alas, Dumas drove me to endure as Edmond had endured. His storytelling was too good to stop. As well, I do not have the count's wealth, and so i preferred the free translation... I read what I paid for...
  • Epic but requires much patience

There were genuinely many moments that were a 5-star reading experiences for me — emotional, tense, immersive, and unforgettable. I completely understand why it’s considered a classic. But as a modern reader, the length and pacing sometimes made the experience uneven, and certain outdated social attitudes pulled me out of the story. I admired this book more consistently than I loved every moment of reading it, but I’m still very glad I experienced it.

I saw the movie when I was younger and thought it was good. Now having read this novel in its entirety, I will remember the movie as trash and never recommend it to anyone. This book is amazing, simply put.
