Holy work sometimes requires unholy deeds.

Brother Diaz has been summoned to the Holy City, where he is certain a commendation and grand holy assignment awaits him. But his new flock is made up of unrepentant murderers, practitioners of ghastly magic, and outright monsters. The mission he is tasked with will require bloody measures from them all in order to achieve its righteous ends.

Elves lurk at our borders and hunger for our flesh, while greedy princes care for nothing but their own ambitions and comfort. With a hellish journey before him, it's a good thing Brother Diaz has the devils on his side.

Joe Abercrombie has always been an author I knew I could count on for an enjoyable escape at the least, if not a memorable story. At first, I thought I’d stick it out, but the book gradually became unbearable for me. The plot was… I don’t want to say missing, but elusive might be the most accurate description. Characters could have been interesting (except for the whiny priest) but remained undeveloped. Aside from an initial burst of action at the start, 100 pages in it was just boring. A most dissappointing purchase.

Joe’s prose is still excellent, but the plot on this one was meh. Pretty predictable from the jump, and I was left pretty disappointed at the end.

Not what I expected, but a pilgrimage of misfits not to be missed.

First book i’ve read after not reading for a couple of years. Can’t recommend enough, and very hard to put down. I have this as physical copy and not even in apple books. That’s how good i think this book is; writing a review for a digital copy I don’t have. Do yourself a favor and read this.

I read the author’s “Shattered Sea” series, which was moderately enjoyable. I found this book infuriating. Too many devil characters not having a role, or explanation of their role, during different phases of the book.

Ok. Story = overlooked female lead that is, surprise, attractive with heart of gold. Coupled with god like socially misunderstood companions. No intrigue because primary characters are never at risk of death. All characters literally talk in same format so you don’t event know the difference It takes ages to progress the story because character driven plot fails when each character is basic one dimension cliche that folds into themselves Had to dump this at 25%z what a dude
