“[A] word-of-mouth smash hit.” The New York Times

“A treasure.” —Hoda Kotb

To Kill a Mockingbird for this generation.” —The Dallas Morning News

One spring morning, a stranger named Theo arrives in the small Southern city of Golden. He doesn’t explain much about where he came from or why he’s there—but when he visits the local coffeehouse, where pencil portraits of the people of Golden hang on the walls, he begins purchasing them, one at a time, and giving each portrait to the person depicted. In exchange, he asks only for the person’s story. And so portrait by portrait, person by person, secrets are revealed, regrets are shared, and ordinary lives are profoundly altered.

A story of giving and receiving, of seeing and being seen, Theo of Golden is an unforgettable novel about the power of generosity, the importance of connection, and the quiet miracles that happen when we choose kindness and wonder.

In Theo of Golden by Allen Levi, art comes alive in multiple forms. A mysterious elderly stranger arrives in a small Southern town, buys pencil portraits off a coffeehouse wall, and returns them to their owners just to hear their stories. Levi masterfully displays the art of words through this tale of quiet, creative generosity. I marveled at his choice of words and his delivery. It’s like a most delicious meal that you eat slowly to savor every morsel…and savor it I did indeed.

I never write book reviews. I’ll select some level of stars, but this is possibly my first fiver—there’s always something lacking, though I suspect that’s more about me than the author’s words. Theo of Golden changed that for me, and for that, five stars it must be. At the risk of spoiling anything, I’ll pause here to give people time to stop reading with these words: Read. This. Book. Beyond that, I’m torn: angry at the three brutes who inadvertently caused the end of Theo and his masterful approach to life and humanity, but happy to finally understand the mystery of him. I didn’t stop weeping from the cello recital forward—so many emotions!—but I finish with a light heart and an intent to do and be better. At life and love, and at friendship. To the Mr. Levi, thank you. To those still deciding: Read this book.

This is a book about goodness and compassion in the form of an unassuming elderly gentleman who demonstrated what we can all be for one another.
