Description

A New York Times bestseller, Jonathan Auxier’s The Night Gardener is a Victorian ghost story with shades of Washington Irving and Henry James. More than just a spooky tale, it’s also a moral fable about human greed and the power of storytelling.

The Night Gardener follows two abandoned Irish siblings who travel to work as servants at a creepy, crumbling English manor house. But the house and its family are not quite what they seem. Soon the children are confronted by a mysterious spectre and an ancient curse that threatens their very lives.

With Auxier’s exquisite command of language, The Night Gardener is a mesmerizing read and a classic in the making.

“Lots of creepiness, memorable characters, a worthy message, Auxier’s atmospheric drawings and touches of humor amid the horror make this cautionary tale one readers will not soon forget.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“Storytelling and the secret desires of the heart wind together in this atmospheric novel that doubles as a ghost tale.” —School Library Journal, starred review

This book is full of wonder and mystery great for a spooky read anytime of the year. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone. This is my second favorite book but is very close to beating "Ms Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" which if you like this book you would love that one.

The Night Gardener is a spooky story about two children and their adventure as the help for a family that resides in a manor in the woods. They feel a strange presence throughout the night, as if something— or someone— is in the house as they sleep. They investigate, and figure out that the Night Man, also known as the Night Gardener, is tending to a large tree outside the house in attempt to kill everyone in the house through their own greed. They end up killing the tree and the Night Gardener. Personally, I thought this book was extremely well-written, but lacked in creepiness. I thought it was a good book, but I felt it missed the mark on the effect it was set out to give. In addition, I felt the ending could’ve been more creative and original. However, the lesson about greed and materialism along with the lesson about stories and how they affect you were good, and I felt it’s important for everyone to understand that your own wellbeing is more important than materialistic ideals. All in all, it was a pretty good book. Not the best I’ve read this summer, but good anyhow.

This book starts out slow at the beginning, but once you get to the fifth chapter it gets more interesting and intriguing. I loved this book because there were cliff hangers at the end of every chapter that made you want to read more

I hate reading and I got assigned this book for school and I loved it, I was supposed to read it over the summer and I dint know until orientation so I had 3 days to read it 😂 and loved it. I have to admit the beginning was really boring to me but it got better. I would definitely recommend this book. I also like the few pictures at the beginning they gave you a visual of the scene and what not, so yeah. I over all thought it was good, and I consider myself a "tough book critic" since I don't like most books.

Some books are usually filled with fluff and unimportant details that distract the reader from the actual story, but not this book. This story manages to keep the reader hooked at all times and uses fantastic similes and words throughout the book.
