By the time Song Jiang meets the one-man wrecking crew known as Li Kui, it's clear that the former public servant known to outlaws across the land as the Timely Rain will be the galvanizing protagonist of Outlaws of the Marsh. More than any other character, Song Jiang is the figure whose adventures (and misadventures) propel the story forward; he is the one who unites all of the other desparate characters, either through direct influence or the mere mention of his name. But while such things make it clear he will be the most consequential figure in the story of the LiangShan bandits, there are already suggestions that Song Jiang's importance may not ensure a positive outcome for those around him.
There is already evidence to suggest that Song Jiang may not be a perfect strategist: recently, his actions have cost friends and allies dearly, despite the best of intentions. Particularly in the matter of Liu Gao's wife, Song Jiang demonstrated a dangerous shortcoming: he was not a good judge of another person's character, and it nearly cost him his life. Fortunately Song Jiang was surrounded by enough allies to escape danger. This is his greatest strength.
